The Gnomes had long kept to themselves in the space between the settled lands of the goodly folk, sometimes acting as a buffer between warring factions, or a nuisance not worth the trouble. Many Gnomes intermingled with the goodly folk acting as tinkers, scribers, traders, and crafters of all sorts. Few were known to embrace the martial and magical arts, but of those few great renown was earned.
With all of the goodly races of Egron at war, it was up to the Gnomes to broker back-door deals, and keep the black market trade of food, goods, and weapons alive. Even if the lords of the lands were at war, the common people still needed to eat and trade. A Gnome has never been known to turn down a deal, just be sure you’ve not ended up outwitted in an exchange and giving up more than you bargained.
Wanting no part of the larger disputes, the Gnomes are arbiters, and in many parts of the world their lands are recognized as the only haven for all. There are known cities of Gnomes where Good, Neutral, and Evil races live in a sort of tolerated peace…
